The MAC Dash is turning six this year! The sixth annual event will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2013. This year’s event includes a sprint triathlon and the kid’s Mini MAC Dash. All events will be centered at the beautiful Madras Aquatic Center in Madras, Oregon. This is a volunteer-organized community event whose proceeds benefit the Madras Aquatic Center’s youth programming. Triathlon – The MAC Dash sprint triathlon is a fun, high-quality, pool-based event. This race consists of a 500-yard swim, a 12-mile road bike and a 3-mile run. Both individual and team competitors are welcome. Mini MAC Dash – The Mini MAC Dash is open to children 10 years and younger. THIS EVENT IS FREE!! The focus of the event is participation, not competition. This untimed event is a great way to introduce young children to triathlons and encourage physical activity. The Mini MAC Dash includes swim, bike and run legs. There are short course and long course options for the swim and bike (approxomate distances). SWIM: Short Course – 2 widths of the lap pool Long Course – 6 widths of the lap pool BIKE: Short Course – 1/3 mile (relatively flat) Long Course – 1 mile (with some fun hills) RUN: Both Courses -1/4 mile Children may mix-n-match these varying courses to create the race that best suits them. Flotation devices, training wheels and adult assistance are all welcome. All participants must wear a helmet while biking. Registration for the Mini MAC Dash is now open and will close at approximately one hour before the race begins. The event will begin as the adult triathlon ends, approximately 11:30AM. Every participant will receive a shirt, goody-bag and a medal.Allowing the Mini MAC Dash to be free keeps it open to all children who want to participate. However, the popularity of this event has impacted the budget of the overall MAC Dash. If your family is able, a $10 donation would be greatly appreciated to off-set the costs. Donations will be accepted during packet pick-up. Community – Madras is a small, rural community located in the beautiful high desert of Central Oregon. There are nine snow-peaked mountains to the west and rolling hills to the east. Each leg of the MAC Dash provides amazing views of the mountains and surrounding area. September is a wonderful time of year in Madras with moderate temperatures and plenty of sunshine. Swim course – The MAC Dash will begin at the Madras Aquatic Center, a premier swimming facility. The swim requires completion of 20 lengths of the 25-yard lap pool. Your estimated 500-yard swim time is required to determine your race heat. You will be circle-swimming in a lane with competitors who report similar swim times. Significantly inaccurate times may result in disqualification. Bike course – The 12-mile bike course begins and ends at the Madras Aquatic Center parking lot. The course leads the bikers through agricultural and quiet, residential areas of Madras. The roads are wide and well paved. An ANSI/Snell approved helmet is required. Ride on the right side of the road and pass to the left. Drafting, defined as being within 3 bike lengths of the rider in front of you, is not allowed. Flaggers and volunteers will be at intersections along the race course, but be alert to traffic. This course is not closed to vehicles. Pacing is not allowed in this event.Run course – Upon beginning the 3-mile run, competitors will head east past the Madras Aquatic Center and Jefferson County Middle School on another wide, well paved road. The runners will then enter Juniper Hills Park and complete one lap of the paved running trail. Runners will finish the race on the track of Jefferson County Middle School. Pacing is not allowed in this event. |
